Nepetalactone is the natural chemical in the catnip plant that drive cats crazy and gives them those healthy ecstasy moments. The Nepetalactone is contained in the catnip plant essential oil. There is a higher concentration of essential oil in the flower tops and less in the leaves and stems. Although, there is no need to waste anything. The entire plant stem and all is completely ideal for making pockets for kitty cat to carry and bat around!
When giving catnip buds to your cat, it is recommended you crush a flower or bud between your fingers and give it to your cat after removing the stems. When you crush the buds, you release the essential oil in the tiny bells, kitty cat will hear bells once he gets a good whiff!
Catnip is perfectly safe around kittens, however kittens under 3 months of age will rarely react to catnip in any form.
